Hevrutah Study on Criminal Justice

Examine the question of how classical Jewish texts and historical experience can help guide contemporary Jewish public policy debates. After a short reflection on the problem of “deriving firm practical conclusions from traditional texts” (Norman Solomon) we will look at recent discussions and resolutions concerning mass incarceration. Participants will then divide into small groups for Hevruta (partner) style learning of texts taken from biblical and rabbinic traditions that might be related to the issues we are facing today. Our hope is that participants will leave the workshop with a renewed appreciation for the relevance of Jewish study to our work in the community relations field. Speakers: Rabbi Leonard Gordon,  and Rabbi Susan Talve
